Bioneedle™ is our hero ingredient in the Tome Foundational Treatment and is the center of all things we do at Toome. Bioneedle™ is 100% natural, raw Spongilla lacustris, a freshwater river sponge that we wild harvest and minimally process into a powder. There are millions of microscopic Bioneedles™ in just one cup in Tome Foundational Treatment — these create microchannels in the top layer of skin during application to spur skin renewal and aid in skin longevity.

The Foundational Treatment is designed to be used only once a week. We recommend starting at night, so it can get to work while you sleep and help your skin settle in. Keep in mind that there will be some downtime for your skin after treatment (especially the first one). You may experience 5-7 days of downtime at first, including some redness and tingling for 24-48 hours, and peeling starting around 72 hours post-treatment. As you get into the routine, expect the downtime to get shorter with each use. Tome Foundational Treatment is not your typical topical. One Tome Foundational Treatment order contains a total of 4 treatments (one monthly supply). To get the full benefits of our Foundational Treatment, we recommend using it weekly for at least 4 weeks to see the full renewal benefits. After each weekly treatment the skin continues to renew itself to make it appear fresher and more radiant than the week before. Once you complete your first 4 weeks of treatments, it’s recommended to continue doing Tome treatments less frequently to maintain overall skin health and longevity. The Foundational Treatment can be tailored to your skincare goals — everyone uses Tome differently based on their skin type and lifestyle. As a subscriber, you can go into your account and adjust your delivery frequency based on what works for your desired routine.

Tome is built for most skin types, but the application can be tailored to your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, start with lighter pressure and less massage time and increase each week as tolerable. It is important to massage the spicules into the skin, so they can get to work. That is the power of the Bioneedle™. We do not recommend Tome Foundational Treatment be applied to patients with rosacea, atopic dermatitis, or who have open wounds.

Microneedling is generally done with a device, like a microneedling pen or Dermaroller®. These devices are man-made and can be more invasive and painful than Bioneedles™. Since microneedles tend to penetrate deeper into the dermis than Bioneedles™, they may result in mild bleeding and traditionally need to be performed by a licensed skincare professional. Tome Bioneedles are precisely sized to only penetrate the top layer of the skin — Bioneedling is less invasive and typically has less downtime associated with the treatment. Therefore, you may experience temporary redness and tingling in skin, but you should not experience any bleeding or spreading of bacteria.

Prior to application, you should always wash your face with a mild cleanser to remove any dirt or makeup. We recommend making sure your face is very clean before you start your treatment, so sometimes a double cleanse is needed.

You can use your finger or another mixing stick to mix the product, but you should always use your fingers to massage the product into the skin. 

At home, you will pour the Activator into the Bioneedle™ cup and mix with the brush until the powder completely dissolves. You must let the mixture sit for 1-2 minutes, until it becomes foamy. The cup should look filled, or slightly overfilled with a mask-like texture. Once it looks like this, it’s ready to apply! Unlike most skincare products, ours is not pre-mixed ahead of time and we intentionally designed the product this way. When you mix with the Bioneedle™ powder with the Activator at-home, it reacts and liberates oxygen, which creates the foam. This ensures maximum potency and even distribution of the spicules (needle-like rods inside the Bioneedle™ powder). 

Tome Foundational Treatment only consists of 2 ingredients: Our hero ingredient, Bioneedle™, is 100% natural, wild-harvested Spongilla lacustris that we minimally process into a powder. Spongilla lacustris is a river sponge we source from freshwater environments in Eastern Europe. Our exclusive Spongilla lacustris is treated to ensure removal of harmful impurities, including pseudomonas, E. coli and any other harmful bacteria, while preserving its helpful biological components and structural integrity. It is free from dyes, parabens, phenoxyethanol, fragrances, silicones, and GMOs. The second ingredient is the Activator, which consists of hydrogen peroxide and water. When mixed with the Bioneedle™ powder at home, it oxidizes and the hydrogen peroxide is broken down into oxygen and water.

Hydrogen peroxide is purely used as an oxidizing agent for the mask you make at home. When it mixes with the Bioneedle™ powder, it reacts with the sponge and liberates oxygen, which creates the foam. Through this process hydrogen peroxide is broken down into oxygen and water. Activating the Bioneedle powder at-home ensures even distribution of the spicules for maximum potency.

We have not yet tested our Foundational Treatment on someone that is pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are still interested in using Tome while pregnant or breastfeeding, we recommend discussing it with your primary care doctor.

Many consumers see noticeable improvement in their skin after the first treatment. Consumers report that after the mild peeling around day 3, they have softer and fresher looking skin. With each additional weekly application consumers report more even skin texture and tone. Then around 4-5 weeks of treatment some consumers report a reduction in the appearance of dark spots and fine lines. 

Tome is a professional-grade treatment designed to be skincare you can feel working, but is safe to use at home. You should expect some temporary redness and a tingling sensation upon application, which many consumers say feels spicy. This redness and feeling should fade over the next 24-48 hours. Then 2-3 days later you may experience mild peeling, allowing the new, fresh skin to the surface. All are expected from the application and are good signs that the Bioneedle™ is working in your skin! Our Bioneedle™ contains millions of spicules (needle-like rods) that penetrate the skin to help exfoliate dead skin cells while promoting blood flow. The increase in blood flow helps brings oxygen and blood cells to the surface to spur skin renewal. With each weekly application, you can expect the downtime to get shorter. 

Yes, some redness is expected when using Tome. Our proprietary Bioneedle™ powder contains millions of microscopic spicules that help exfoliate dead skin cells while promoting blood flow to the skin. The increase in blood flow helps brings oxygen and blood cells to the surface to accelerate skin renewal, but may cause some temporary redness for around 24-48 hours post-treatment. If you are red for more than 72 hours, then try doing the next application with lighter massage pressure while your skin continues to adapt to the treatment.

Most people using Tome experience mild peeling two or three days after treatment and less with each additional weekly treatment. The Bioneedle facilitates the rapid renewal of the skin, causing the top layer of dead skin to slough off, and allowing new skin to rise to the surface. While your skin is renewing, we recommend keeping your skincare routine simple with a good moisturizer, hydrating serums, and calming skincare products. Make sure to always use SPF and wear sun protection during this time to ensure maximum results. 

Yes, the Bioneedles™ can cause some people to feel a “tingling” sensation, or as some say, spicy, which should improve in under 24 hours. The intensity of the sensation can vary depending on the sensitivity of your skin. If you believe you are experiencing reactions that are more severe than what is expected, please consult a physician and reach out to our team below. 

Yes, this is normal and a good sign the treatment is working! When you massage the mask into your skin, you’re allowing the Bioneedles™ to get to work — they will usually remain in the top layer of your skin for 24 hours and will naturally extract themselves (remember they are microscopic). This process will spur the exfoliation of dead skin cells, and will naturally start peeling within 24-36 hours of treatment, helping to bring refreshed skin to the surface. 

While everyone’s skin is different, majority of customers who use Tome experience a range of redness and peeling anywhere from 2-5 days after treatment. If you didn’t experience any redness or peeling, try a bit more pressure as you massage the mask in next time. Make sure you are applying the mask on one small area (1-2 inch section) of the face and massaging in that concentrated area for 20-30 seconds. Then repeat with the next area until your face is fully covered. The Bioneedle™ cup looks small, but there will be more than enough mask to cover your face, so don’t worry about running out! After each application, your skin needs time to renew. Right after the routine, we recommend to keep it simple. It’s recommended to keep the face bare overnight. It is normal for your skin to feel tight & tingly, especially the first night. If desired, you can apply a hydrating serum (think: hyaluronic or ceramides) before bed, but stay away from moisturizers right after treatment as your pores are more open than usual and moisturizers could potentially clog pores.  In the morning, you are welcome to use a gentle cleanser, apply moisturizer, and always wear SPF sunscreen & sun protection if you are going to be outside.  We also recommend avoiding excessive sweating within the first 24 hours. You can begin to apply makeup after 24 hours.  Lastly you should avoid any exfoliating products, like retinols or scrubs for at least 3 days. We recommend keeping your skincare routine simple during this time — think: cleansing, moisturizing, hydrating, cooling, and calming products.

The Bioneedle™ powder is 100% natural, raw Spongilla lacustris, which is a fresh-water sponge we wildly harvested from a river. We purposely do not add any additives or fragrances to maintain the natural, earthy aroma. It's like you pulled it from the river yourself.

The Tome Foundational Treatment should take about 15-20 minutes from start to finish, once-a-week. Expect about 1 minute to wash your face, 1-2 minutes to mix the Activator into the Bioneedle powder and let it set up. About 2 minutes to complete the full application with 20-30 seconds spent on each area of the face. 10-15 minutes while the mask dries on the skin. Then a final minute to wash the mask off. 

We do not recommend spot treating. Treating your full face with every weekly application invites the most even skin renewal benefits. 

Since the Bioneedle disrupts the top layer of skin, it is best to avoid long sun exposure right after treatment. If sun exposure is expected, then we always recommend using a SPF 50 and headwear sun protection for your face.

Tome is currently only available in the U.S. We ship to all 50 states, including Hawaii and Alaska, plus the District of Columbia. We do ship to PO Boxes and military bases, but not other U.S. territories, including Puerto Rico.

All Tome orders ship for free and should arrive within 3-5 business days. We also offer Express shipping for $20. Express orders should arrive within 1-2 business days. 

Orders placed before 1:00 pm CST generally ship the same business day from our warehouse in Dallas, TX. Our warehouses are closed on weekends and major holidays. Please note the day your order ships does not count toward transit time. Orders generally arrive 3 to 5 business days after you place your order, depending on your location. Once you become a subscriber, your first order will include our Foundational Treatment Starter Kit that will contain 4 weekly treatment boxes, with each treatment box containing 1 Bioneedle™ cup, 1 Activator tube, and 1 Brush. After your first shipment, each additional order will contain a refill kit that contains 4 Bioneedle cups, 4 Activator tubes, and 4 Brushes that can be refilled into your Tome book box.
